This a guide to Getting Started in LEGO Dimensions - from unboxing the game, to assembling the Minifigures, to navigating the playable section of the game leading up to the start of the first proper level (Follow the LEGO Brick Road).
- Unpack the Game Disc and Start the Update Process
Before putting the game disc in, make sure the game console is connected to the internet. Put the game disc in, which should start an update process.
- Unpack the Toy Pad and Assemble the Minifigures
While the software is updating, unpack the Toy Pad, find the bag (labeled "1") that contains the minifigure pieces, and find the instruction booklet for assembling the Minifigures and the Gateway Portal.
Assemble the three Minifigures using the instructions in the booklet. (Tip: The capes are in a small square white box).
- Optional: Assemble the Gateway Portal
There are two options for assembling the Gateway Portal - either do it now before starting the game, using the instructions in the booklet, or wait until prompted to do so in-game, with the option to use the on-screen instruction guide. It may take 30 mins - 1 hr for an individual working alone to assemble the portal, depending on the individual's LEGO engineering abilities.
If assembling the Gateway Portal now, skip the final step of putting it on the Toy Pad (until prompted to do so in-game).
- Start the Game
Once the game has finished updating, the three Minifigures are ready to go, and the Toy Pad is unpacked, it's time to launch the game software.
- Adjust Screen Settings
After an introductory cinematic, the game will prompt to "press any button", and then adjust the screen settings. Use the D-Pad to move the four arrows to the corners of the screen (with the arrows still visible), then "accept". Once the main menu is up, select "New Game" and an empty slot.
- Connect the Toy Pad
When prompted, connect the Toy Pad to the console.
- Place the Minifigures on the Toy Pad
The game will prompt for the Minifigures to be placed on the Toy Pad one at a time.
First place the Batman minifigure on the Toy Pad, which launches a cinematic.
After the Batman cinematic, place the Gandalf figure on the Toy Pad when prompted, launching another cinematic.
After the Lord of the Rings cinematic, place the Wyldstyle minifigure on the Toy Pad, in the position indicated, launching another cinematic.
- Place the figures in the correct positions on the Toy Pad
After the final cinematic, the game will move to a cave-like setting with a flashing Toy Pad. Move a Minifigure on the section of the Toy Pad that is flashing (even if there is already a minifigure there - just lift it and replace it). There should one minifigure on the left sector, one on the right sector, and one in the center circle. Once the figures are placed correctly, another cinematic will launch.
- Collect the Gateway Portal pieces
Once the cinematic ends, the characters will need to collect the Gateway Portal pieces. Each character has one set of pieces that only they can release.
As Batman, go to the station on the left side and use his grapple to pull the hook, creating a stairway. Use Batman's batarang to target the switch at the top of the stairs. Head back down the stairs and build the pieces.
As Gandalf, stand on the star covered area to the right of the Toy Pad, and use his wizard staff to raise the platform into the air. Once the platform turns into a stairwell and lands him in front of the portal pieces, use the wizard staff to release them. Head down the stairs and build the pieces.
As Wyldstyle, head around the far right corner and stand on the glowing circle. Jump up and grab the bar above, pulling it down to create a passage up above. Wall jump back and forth up the new passage, then attack the glowing pieces to release them. Head back down to the ground and build the pieces.
- Build the Gateway Portal
Once the three sets of pieces are nicely stacked, have Wyldstyle stand on the glowing circle in the center to perform her first "Masterbuild".
It's time to build the physical Gateway Portal toy, if it hasn't already been completed. Once it's completed, place it on the Toy Pad as per the directions.
Once the physical Gateway Portal toy is on the Toy Pad, Wyldstyle will build it in-game.
- Build the Batmobile
Once the Gateway Portal is set, it's time to switch to Batman and build the Batmobile. Use the in-game Schematics to put this Vehicle together. Once it's completed, select "Yes" to "save this model onto its Toy Tag", then put the car on the Toy Pad.
- Use the Batmobile to activate the switch
Hop in the Batmobile and move it onto the ramp that has newly appeared to the right of the Gateway Portal. Once on the ramp, continue to accelerate even though the path is blocked. Once the on-screen meter is filled, a switch will activate, and cut scene will launch, and it's time to start the Follow the LEGO Brick Road level.
