What You Didn’t See in New Hampshire

The intimate, in-between moments in a frantic march to the primary.

Biden

For the past week, Bernie Sanders, Pete Buttigieg, Elizabeth Warren and the rest of the remaining Democratic presidential candidates have been racing from event to event, appealing to New Hampshire voters and hoping Tuesday’s primary will give voters the first conclusive litmus test of where the party is headed.

As Democrats have crisscrossed the state, veteran portrait photographer Mark Ostow has been tailing them over the past 11 months, in gyms, schools, bingo halls and more. Tiny New Hampshire is known for highly personal retail politicking, and with his signature style, up close and dramatic, Ostow captures the kind of unguarded moments that are increasingly rare as the campaign becomes more national—intimate portraits both in public and outside the spotlight, when the candidates could pause to think or catch their breath, if only briefly.
