Epic Games will be hosting the Fortnite Summer Skirmish series, an 8-week series of competitions with a prize pool of $8 million USD.
Announced on a blog post by the Fortnite team, The Summer Skirmish series will kick-off this weekend with a $250,000 Duos competition comprising of “community creators and Fortnite players who have demonstrated their competitive prowess.”
The team has also noted that “in order to jumpstart the competition, invitations for the inaugural Summer Skirmish matches have already been sent. Stay tuned for more information on how you can qualify for an event.”
This announcement comes less than a day away from the start of Season 5, in which the Fortnite Twitter account has been teasing mysterious images for the past few days.
The first teaser, posted July 9, was of what appears to be the Ancient Egyptian goddess Bastet. The second teaser, which arrived yesterday, was of a Viking-like Axe. Today’s tweet has two rifts bordering an image with the words, “worlds collide…tomorrow.”
The rifts started appearing when Fortnite had its first in-game event that saw a rocket launch cause these anomalies in the sky, which are now spawning new items all over the map, including a wagon and an anchor.
In addition to in-game changes, Fortnite llamas have been spotted in real-world European cities and Fortnite’s Durr Buger has shown up in the middle of a desert in California.
One of the llamas was found in a telephone booth in London and had Doctor Who fans echoing recent Fortnite: Season 5 theories that time travel may be the upcoming season's theme.
Fortnite: Season 5 starts tomorrow, July 12.
