During The X-Files panel at New York Comic Con, a teaser trailer for Season 11 was shown that revealed the next season will debut in 2018.
The footage started in the same place Season 10 left off with a cliffhanger, with a beam of blue light shining down on Scully and Miller. Series creator Chris Carter explained that the first episode will deal with that cliffhanger. The final shot showed a younger version of the mysterious smoking man standing next to an alien and Carter said the first episode will also explore his backstory.
Even though Mulder looked to be in peril at the end of Season 10, the trailer showed him looking fine and rather Scully was in a hospital bed, reaching up to touch her partner’s face. Earlier in the trailer, there’s a scene where Scully’s home gets invaded by masked men shooting guns, and Scully flips a table and draws her gun to fire back. Maybe she gets wounded in the battle. When asked about Scully being hospitalized during the panel, Carter said that it’d be a spoiler to answer and that audiences wouldn’t want to know.
As far as Scully and Mulder’s relationship in this season, Carter said they are professional partners, not romantic partners, but that during this season the two will become “kissing close.”
The new season will also feature a storyline about William, Scully and Mulder’s son that Scully gave up for adoption 14 years ago. Carter said we will see more of William than we have in a long time and the show will explore the father/mother/son dynamic.
Season 11 will have eight standalone episodes and two mythology episodes with a character arc that spans those episodes. Carter said episode eight in particular is pretty messed up, brought to you by the same people who made the also-messed-up episode “Home.”
A fan asked if there will be a new X-Files movie, and Carter said, “Never say never.”
